foil vs. paint

Is Paint Really A True Radiant Barrier?

Let me start off by saying this, if you are considering having a true "Radiant Barrier" installed in your home the paint is not an option. To qualify as a Radiant Barrier a material must have an emittance value of 0.1 or less, our RG 2 Industrial Foil has an emittance value of .03 and as you can see on the chart to the right the best paint only has an emittance value of .23. To help you understand, "Emittance Value" is the amount of heat that the material being used gives off to the air below, you want the emittance value to be as low as possible! Our RG 2 Foil value is .03 meaning that it is reflecting 97% of the incoming radiant heat and only allowing 3% to penetrate through. As mentioned above the best paint listed only has a value of .23, which means it only reflects 77% of the radiant heat therefore allowing 23% to penetrate through.

How Long Will The Paint Be Effective?

Radiant Barrier paint is not a process that only has to be done 1 time, some paints have to be recoated in as little as 10 years. This means that it has already started losing its emittance value in as little as 1 - 2 years after installation. Simply put, a year to two after being sprayed on your not saving as much, and depending on how long you own your home you could have to recoat as many as 5 -6 times. Our RG 2 Foil is a 1 time application that comes with a (Lifetime Transferable Warranty). If our Foil Barrier stops being effective we will come back to the home and replace it at no cost to the current homeowner.

Energy Star Certified?

Energy Star does not give so called radiant barrier paints the Energy Star Stamp, but our RG 2 Foil is Energy Star Certified and after installation you will recieve a Manafacturer's Certification Statement so that you can claim the installation as an energy improvement. Remember that when a product has been Energy Star Certified it has been proven to save money & energy!

Sometimes when we see or hear a large home improvement store or a tv or radio personality endorse a product we tend to trust that endorsement simply because of who they are, but remember you should always research and explore your options then make a decision based on your findings. We here at Applied Energy Concepts feel that if you do that we will most likely be seeing you soon to install our Radiant Barrier Foil in your home or business.
